Singapore has commissioned Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar farm at Tengeh Reservoir, adding 100 megawatt-peak of renewable energy capacity to the grid. The installation features over 180,000 solar panels spread across 13 floating platforms covering 70 hectares — equivalent to 100 football fields.
Engineering Innovation
Built by Sembcorp Industries in partnership with PUB, the floating solar farm uses advanced anchoring systems designed for reservoir conditions. The panels are certified for drinking water reservoirs and include wildlife corridors for birds. The cooling effect of water improves panel efficiency by 5-10% compared to land-based installations.
Solar Target Progress
With this addition, Singapore’s total solar capacity exceeds 1.5 gigawatt-peak, meeting approximately 8% of the nation’s electricity demand. The country aims to deploy at least 2 GWp of solar by 2030 under the Singapore Green Plan. Future plans include offshore solar farms in Singapore waters and building-integrated photovoltaics for new developments.
Regional Context
Singapore’s floating solar success is drawing interest from neighboring countries. Thailand and Vietnam have announced plans for floating solar projects on their hydropower reservoirs, potentially adding gigawatts of capacity across the Mekong region. The Asian Development Bank has earmarked US$2 billion for floating solar development in Southeast Asia through 2030.
