Singapore has designated 2026 as the Year of Climate Adaptation, with Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu announcing a suite of new initiatives to protect the city-state from climate impacts ranging from extreme heat to rising seas.
Heat Resilience Office
A new Heat Resilience Policy Office has been established under MSE, bringing together agencies from National Development, Health, Manpower, and Social and Family Development to coordinate heat management efforts nationwide. The government has committed S$40 million to research on how heat affects vulnerable populations, including outdoor workers and the elderly.
National Adaptation Plan
Singapore is drafting its first National Adaptation Plan — a comprehensive blueprint covering heat resilience, flood protection, coastal defence, and water and food security. The plan is expected to be published in 2027. Singapore has set aside S$10 billion for a dedicated flood protection fund.
Coastal Protection
With about 30% of Singapore’s land less than 5 metres above sea level, coastal protection is a critical priority. The government is exploring a range of solutions including sea walls, tidal gates, and nature-based approaches such as mangrove restoration. Long-term spending on climate adaptation could reach S$100 billion over coming decades.
